Re: Canning Butter

Sitting out on the table and going rancid is one thing--it won't kill you. Botulism will only happen in an environment with no air--such as when you can something. We bought some commercially produced canned butter and dried butter for storage (not a lot because of $), but I will not can butter beca...

Re: Interesting idea for a cheap shelter

Whisper, how does putting insulation on the "outside" work? What kind of insulation would you use and how do you protect it from the elements?

Re: Salt

We have A LOT of salt--more than 150 lbs. We have sea salt (both iodized and plain), regular iodized salt, canning and pickling salt, and kosher salt. Salt is valuable not only for seasoning and canning, but also for preserving meat and other food. You can buy salt cheaply in 50 lb bags.

Re: One Day Class in Wilkes County NC

Here is my response on the cross-post on the main forum:
I went to Donna's class in May and enjoyed it very much. I learned A LOT about baking with whole grains, the use of different grain mills, and made some wonderful new friends including several preppers! Donna is a great instructor.

Re: Easy to make Roux for Gumbos, Soups and stews

The post that I linked and quoted above was part of a thread that started about stocks and broth. http://www.americanpreppersnetwork.net/viewtopic.php?f=123&t=869&start=0&hilit=roux The reason I re-posted it here was to let folks know that you can make a lot of roux at one time, cool and...

Re: Textiles, sewing, clothing, knitting, crocheting, etc.

In seventh grade we girls had one class a week in which we learned some basic hand sewing--hemming, hooks and eyes, buttons, darning. In college I took sewing as an elective and learned to use a sewing machine and make clothes from a pattern. Most of my sewing has been Halloween costumes, curtains, ...
