Just plain old cardboard makes good tinder. Take a box and cut it into 2 inch strips and roll up. Place the cardboard under the wood and light. I used to flatten boxes and bring them home. The boxes was all I used to get a fire going. The cardboard burns hot and quick.

The quake was a 7.1. What's amazing is that nobody was killed. New Zealand has very strict building codes. One person is critical. A chimney fell on him.

As far as storage, what ever works for you. I had tons of glass canning jars(mainly quarts). The rats and mice can't chew through the glass and metal lids.
