Re: Happy Thanksgiving

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! We had dinner at my daughter's (Since she actually has a dining room, whereas I do not). I made the pumpkin pies last night, and did up the cornbread stuffing and the turkey here then carried it over to her house (actually, her husband carried the turkey in th...

Re: November 2017 - What did You Do To Prep This Week/Month?

Husband decided to start building a "temporary" chicken coop last weekend. Temporary, my hind end...the thing is 4 ft by 8 ft, with a 6 ft long by 2 ft wide "nest box". Still need to finish off with a "clean-out door, chicken door, ramp, and fencing around it, and hardware &...

Re: Use It or Lose It

The "bucket" of a front-end loader on a tractor works well for transporting a large animal like a hog or steer from the kill site to the site where the rest of the work will be done.

Re: Another day, another apocalypse

While SOME people may "prep" because of "Doomsday" predictions, those are the ones that quit after the apocalypse fails to happen. As for me, like Cast Iron, It's a "lifestyle choice". We're working on becoming as self-sufficient as possible, mainly because "stuff&...

Re: Use It or Lose It

I agree that knowing how to properly slaughter, butcher, and process is essential to learn NOW, and not when your survival depends on it. Last year, I raised, slaughtered, butchered, and processed our Thanksgiving/Christmas turkey (he was so big, we had half of him for each holiday, with enough left...

Re: Pneumonic Plague

ALWAYS be aware of allergies to medicines. For me, it's doxycycline, Keflex, ibuprofen, sulfa-type drugs, and especially flu vaccines. (Anaphylaxis is NOT a fun experience, and one that I do NOT wish to repeat!)

Re: November 2017 - What did You Do To Prep This Week/Month?

Finished the last of the drywall taping and mudding, and the last little bit of painting in the "she shed." Got the sewing desk, machine, cutting table, ironing table, fabric, and dress forms moved in; as well as my 1880's costumes, boots, and hats. Got the spare room vacuumed up from thre...

Re: Cash Money

You might want to consider switching to a bank with a local branch (or a credit union) so that you DON'T get hit with ATM fees. Keep enough in the bank for a month or two of "operating expenses", and YOU keep the rest.

Re: Why Only a Few States?

How can the government protect over 320 million people? Answer, they can't. The only thing we can expect is for our Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard to to attempt to keep the "bad toy" at bay. That is part of the role the "federal" level should play. If that fails then the states...

Re: How Will You Cope In a Long Term SHTF

Not only do I have enough clothing and shoes to last quite a while, but I know how to make clothing, and quilts, as well; and have plenty of fabric, thread, needles (as well as a treadle sewing machine.) As for shoes, I DO know how to make moccasins, and have leather to work with. Someone here local...

Re: Soap

Have enough Fels Naptha soap, Borax, and washing soda to make detergent for several years. Although I'm well stocked with soap, I also know how to make soap. It's an important skill to have. And yes, baking soda makes a good substitute for toothpaste, although it can be very abrasive, so use careful...
