Trucker Strike in Oct?

Postby Here2Learn » Tue Sep 17, 2013 12:41 am

I'm not sure I put this in the right place but......

Has anyone else heard of people trying to get support for a three day trucker strike in Oct?

Supposedly, this is being done as an anti-government protest. I just heard about this tonight and they do have a faceboook page that was created yesterday and allready has over 8200 Likes.

So, I've always heard that the magic number is three days of the turcks not running to cause a major melt down. If this happened how bad of a SHTF situation could this potentially create?

Some of what I read, said that this event is unlikely to get off the ground as owner/operators would lose too much money and that "company drivers" would be fired for not showing up to work and that even if there was a small group that went ahead, there would be more then enough drivers to step in and handle their work.

I'm interested in opinions from the group:

Does this have a chance of happening?

If not now, does it have a chance of happening as things get worse?

If it did happen, how bad do you think things could get and for how long?

I guess its just another excercise in prepping.. one more thing to watch out and be prepared for.

There was a limited trucker slowdown back in the early 1970's... mostly caused by fuel prices.

They blocked a few roads here and there, but it didn't amount to much.

These days, trucking companies hire teams of drivers from eastern europe, pakistan and all points east and west. They ain't gonna strike.
You know times are bad in America when GW Bush's presidency starts looking good..

Dutch isn't entirely correct. If the union called it for three days, it could work. You can't fly foreign drivers into the country, the truckers would beat the heck out of them.

Though I wouldn't want to be in the city if they did. There is only three days of food on the shelves.

an anti-gooberment strike by a union? .... exactly what possible union are you talking about? .... the unions have been sitting sweet the last 5 years with a direct line to Obammy .... there's no major union that didn't contribute HUGE toward getting Obammy re-elected .... and all the union sheeple are just following along .... doing whatever their leaders tell them to do

there are lots of foreign driver on the roads now day. Simply because American drivers want to be home in the evenings like normal people. And want a descent wage to take home. Not one spent on the road to survive. The foreigners come over on visas sponsored by trucking companies. Its a way to met driver shortages. Not that its right. But they work cheaper. Its like out sourcing to another country. But instead they bring the people here. Its a leason learned from the middle east and all of the foreigners they bring in to do the jobs that they are to good to do.

I drove for years... A strike would be bad depending on the scale of it.
I never heard of people from other countries coming over here to drive? How do they get a US CDL"A" W/airbrake endorsement? Don't you have to be a US citizen and live in a state for "X" amount of months or a year to just get a standard state drivers license? The only thing I can find is;
"Jul 21, 2006 - An American company is recruiting long-haul truck drivers from India"
"The Teamsters Union strongly opposes the plan by Gagan Global LLC of Garnerville, N.Y"
Sounds like this idea died on the table 7 years ago.

Image
First, it's difficult to get certified. The biggest hurdle for the unemployed is getting a commercial driver's license. The training course to learn those skills can take up to eight weeks to complete and cost about $6,000.
"Drivers are put under intense scrutiny before they get into the industry, and for good reason," said Brett Aquila, trucker and creator of the blog TruckingTruth. "It's incredibly risky putting someone behind the wheel of an 80,000 pound truck with your company's name on it."
And when drivers do get on the road, they find the long-haul lifestyle isn't easy, living for weeks at a time in the cramped confines of the back of the truck.
"You have a gigantic culture shock when someone is suddenly living on the road in a space the size of a walk-in closet," said Aquila. "Then you have the pressure, the erratic sleep patterns, and the time away from home, family, and friends."
For these reasons, job turnover is high for truckers. At the same time, as the economy stages a gradual recovery, more new positions are becoming available.

Dh is an OTR. class A license. He has not heard of this. No real company is going to hire foreigners unless they have a CFL and can pass a background check. Yes, there are a lot of middle-eastern looking driver out there. But unless they have the proper documentation, they wouldn't be driving very long.
Gosh, it would screw up crap if they did strike. Wouldn't it? The sheep in the government fold would be so distressed!

Edit*****CDL. damn CFL drivers p!$& me off. Lol

No sooner than I read this earlier today did I go over to Facebook to sort it all out, and right after that I saw Glenn Beck had picked up the story. Now it is ALL OVER Facebook. It seems like there were initially two groups--one that advocated a drive in to D.C. and the other that wanted to shut down trucking and more on Oct. 11-13. It looks as though the two groups have either merged or the main shut down group also has the idea to drive in to gridlock D.C. This should be interesting to see how (or if) mainstream news handles it. I honestly don't have an opinion yet as to whether I think they will be hurting or helping their cause.

Isn't DC already gridlocked? I mean they haven't done anything useful in years.... :whistling:

Seriously though, if even a significant percent of truckers strike then it will be a huge mess. Might wake folks up a bit, or it might just get DC to add another category of folks who aren't allowed to strike, claiming they are indispensable or something...

Here's hoping this thing fizzles and we don't get to find out what would happen!

What, specifically, are they protesting?
