LDS Cannery

Postby RightWingMom » Tue Aug 31, 2010 4:19 pm

Check w/ your local LDS church. (Latter-Day Saints)
Most cities have an LDS cannery. They won't have an enormous variety, but their prices cannot be beat!
You'll have to help can, but it's worth the savings.

Our LDS cannery had: dry beans, wheat berries, powdered milk, sugar, dehydrated apple slices & carrots, noodles, quick oats, and instant potatoes.
All in 30+ year #10 cans or Mylar bags and a fraction of the cost of online.

We did not have to be members to can and buy food.

I am confused. When you say can, does the cannery actually can it for you? There used to be places like that here but that was way before my time.

tigger2,

I was confused too. ;)

LDS canneries have store houses of dehydrated foods, wheat berries, rice, etc. You "can" the dry food in #10 cans or Mylar bags w/ O2 absorbers. They provide all the equipment and materials, you help with the labor. If you open a box or bag and don't need all of it, you finish canning the rest and donate it to LDS. Most boxes or bags made approx. 15 #10 cans. My mom and I bought almost everything we canned.

We (w/ the help of 2 LDS missionaries) packed up 109 #10 cans in 2 1/2 hours!
My mom and I divided the cans between us.

We packed up #10 cans of:
(9) black beans, (9) white beans, (12) powdered milk, (8) granulated sugar, (22) dried apple slices, (8) dried carrots, (12) macaroni, (14) potato flakes, (15) spaghetti.

They also had pre-packaged #10 canned items.
We grabbed: (18) hard red wheat and (18) white rice. (They were out of pre-packaged quick oatmeal. I'm grabbing that when we go back!)

Total cost was $642!

There is another one. That one seems to be missing locations. I had a post that I did back in Feb about this in the NC forum, but it disappeared. I've gone looking for it every once in a while. But I know that others have posted the other link. It's probably in General. I'm odd to bed in a couple of minutes, but I'll try there.

Try this: http://www.providentliving.org/ This is the main page for the LDS Provident Living website. Once there, look at the very top and there is a "locations" tab. You can download the order sheet, see current pricing, learn about personal finances etc.

Must be nice.... The LDS Bishop for the Orlando Wards will not allow Non-LDS to purchase, use or visit the cannery.....
It is all up to the individual LDS Bishops.

That's not a very charitable attitude. The cannery here is wide open and apparently not too busy most of the time. They let us in and welcomed us with kindness. They showed us exactly what we had to do.

The light had it after all. MrDanB listed the same site but the home page and I was able to find the location here. They did change there web site though. It's not the same. Great job all!

I would just like to add to this... When I originally went to the cannery and showed up unannounced, I was met with cranky gals with their eyebrows tilted up that I was not a church member and just walked in off the street. Once she took my info and forwarded it to the right church branch, I was met by a very nice couple who took us "under their wing" and showed us all about the paperwork and met us at the cannery for the next session. They showed us the proverbial ropes. This is far and away the best resource for getting items in bulk packaged for long term storage at a very fair price!
As far as being charitable or not, I think welcoming us in was very charitable of them and they said that most of the church canneries have a storefront with goods that are for the needy. It is open to anyone of any faith or no faith at all. Doesn't get more charitable than that.... :)

My son has been LDS for quiet a few years, he and his ward volunteers at this paticular storehouse regularly..I called the woman who runs the warehouse and she was very direct about the Bishops directives. It is for LDS use only...
It is up to each Bishop as to who is allowed access to the Bishops Ware House and Cannery.
My son will be working on

I called another LDS Cannery roughly 3 hours North from my home and the Sister I spoke to was thrilled and stated their Bishop had no problem with NON LDS members purchasing and using their cannery..

So can we all say, "ROAD TRIP"........
