E-mail address: cert@co.walton.fl.us
Website address: http://www.co.walton.fl.us
Brief Description: An all volunteer community response team sponsored and trained by the Walton County Emergency Management Division and Walton County Fire Districts. All certified C.E.R.T members have completed a 32 hour training which consists of Disaster Preparedness, Fire Safety, Disaster Medical, CPR Certification, Light Search and Rescue, Disaster Psychology, Terrorism and Cert and a complete Simulation of all the above trainings. Continual monthly meetings and trainings are scheduled for all Cert volunteers to assure their safety and that of the community. New trainings are always in the planning, making our recruiting of volunteers a year round process. Our goal is to always have the Cert Program name out into the different communities of Walton County and we do this by having presentations along with Hurricane Preparedness information at different functions within the County to keep our residents informed of what the Cert Program has to offer all of our residents. Having started this past September 2007 with just 7 certified Cert members our trainings have accomplished to certify 60 new members. With Walton County being a very spread out area the idea of providing trainings in 3 or 4 different areas of the County has made it easier for residents to attend and better turn-outs for the trainings. This new way of running the trainings will continue and has been greatly appreciated by our residents. Getting our County Fire Districts involved have also served to be very successful. This way, the Cert volunteers train closely with the different fire house personnel whom they will likely work closely with if and when there is ever a disaster in their communities. One of our last goals is to certify at least another 30 to 40 members by the end of September 2008. The Emergency Management doors are always open to any new Walton County resident who may need information on how to stay safe in case of a disaster and important contact phone numbers to use if there is ever a need.

At that point, our CERT team members continue to assist where needed at the direction of the professionals. As a CERT team member, you will begin with approximately 25 hours of "hands on" training. This training, done by certified instructors, teaches you and your fellow team members the best methods for taking care of yourself and other citizens before, during and after major incidents. Brief Description: Are You Prepared For A Disaster? Join Pompano Beach CERT Today! Why CERT? After September 11, 2001, America witnessed a wellspring of selflessness and heroism. People in every corner of the country asked, "What can I do?" and "How can I help?" Citizen Corps was created to help all Americans answer these questions through public education and outreach, training, and volunteer service. The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is one of the programs of the Citizen Corps and is administered by your Pompano Beach Fire Department and Emergency Management Division. CERT is a training program that prepares citizens to help themselves, their families and their neighbors in the event of a disaster in their community. “It's all about families helping themselves and neighbors helping neighbors to prepare, respond and recover in their own neighborhood.” Hurricanes Frances, Jeanne, Katrina and Wilma are all hurricanes that have impacted the City of Pompano Beach since 2004. Other disasters such as tornadoes, fires, hazardous materials incidents and acts of terrorism have also proven that the initial hours following a disaster may overwhelm emergency and rescue personnel and volunteers are a valuable resource within their communities. “CERT training gives you the decision-making skills and ability to offer immediate assistance to family members and neighbors without placing yourself in unnecessary danger.” What is CERT? The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates citizens about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following a disaster by assisting first responders immediately following a disaster or helping with recovery efforts. CERT members are also encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

Phone Number: 9547463475
E-mail address: jfarach@cityofsunrise.org
Brief Description: There is a very good chance that your neighborhood will be on its own during the early stages following a catastrophic disaster. After the disaster strikes, citizens will volunteer to help. But without proper training, these people may expose themselves to potential injury or even death. Experience has shown that basic training in disaster survival and rescue skills improves the ability of citizens to survive until emergency responders or other assistance arrives. The CERT program trains volunteers to do just that. Delivering the training and teaching the skills to people in every neighborhood are our main objectives. The basic course will include those components necessary to get the team started and become capable of performing basic CERT functions. To receive a certificate of completion, each team member must finish training in the disciplines described below. Classes are scheduled to accommodate the needs of each team and are available in the evenings and weekends. Teams will learn: CERT Disaster Preparedness - How to prepare themselves and their neighborhoods for various hazards and disaster events. -CERT Team Organization and Disaster Psychology - Organization and management principles essential for the successful operation of a CERT. Covers critical incident stress for victims as well as workers. CERT Medical Operations - How to conduct triage, establish medical treatment areas, and provide basic first aid. -CERT Fire Suppression - How to use fire extinguishers and other equipment to suppress small fires. -CERT Light Search and Rescue - Including planning techniques and rescue safety. These skills are practiced in response to a small-scale simulated disaster and the end of the course.

Re: List of Florida CERT's

Postby itsadisaster » Thu Oct 07, 2010 11:56 pm

As fyi … Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) are 1 of 5 programs under Citizen Corps. CERT members actually get trained in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, and disaster medical operations and is usually delivered in 2-1/2 hour sessions, one evening a week over a 7 week period. And several communities even have Teen CERTs.

Some other programs under Citizen Corps include Fire Corps, Medical Reserve Corps (MRCs), USAWatch (a.k.a. National Neighborhood Watch) and Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS). These programs all rely on volunteers from local communities so consider joining one in your area.

Some Affiliates and Organizations that work closely with Citizen Corps include American Radio Relay League (ARRL), The American Legion, Civil Air Patrol, Girl Scouts,, Jaycees, National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD) and many others.

If you don’t see a CERT posted above in your area (or if you can’t reach a CERT contact above since they do change hands sometimes), visit http://www.citizencorps.gov and search your zip code to see if there is a program near you.

And finally … check out a thread discussing Citizen Corps + various disaster/prep volunteer groups at viewtopic.php?f=106&t=4030
