Safe Propane Storage 1 lb cylinders

Postby NevadaNan72 » Tue May 20, 2014 11:36 am

We live in Arizona in the heat and I've moved our camp stove propane out of the garage as I'm afraid of them getting too hot and exploding. But now I don't know where to put them. Outside gets up to 120 degrees in the summer. I have about 12 containers. I would appreciate any ideas on a safe place to put them. Thanks Nancy

here are a few links that may help you out

I keep mine in my shed , even when its a 100+ outside. the shed seems too stay cooler in the 80's or 90's and that's well within a safe temp for storage. From what I know and have been told, propane won't explode till it reaches 1000 deg fahrenheit, if anyone knows the exact or documented numbers please let me know.

Just ensure you have proper ventilation. A little leakage in an airtight place = a problem. Surely they endure very high temps in warehouses, trucks, with ease. I'd think house on fire kinda temps are the issue, in which instance, I don't think id care about 1# canisters. I have a 250 gallon tank, right next to the shop, that is scary in case of fire

I think you're safe, but read David's posted links JIC. I have 16 of them strapped to my camp/bug out trailer in PVC pipe, they sit in my garage ready to go all the time and i don't worry at all

If really worried put them underground root cellar or burried PVC. In my area the ground stays at 50 degrees. Most areas 65 degrees.

I am sure the people that designed the tanks took normal temperatures into account , I bet if you were to drive around you would see a lot of BBQ grills ,RV's and house's with propane tanks sitting out year round all over arizona.

RayMac, great idea! I would add one more thing tough, perhaps a vent in the pvc pipe is a thought, since the canisters can potentially leak. I would not want to carry around a pvc pipe full of propane just waiting for a spark...

I live in So Cal and my propane tanks (30#) are on my patio year round. We get temps at 100+ and I've never had a problem. And they get direct sunlight.
