Last year August my wife and I packed up my Jeep Cherokee and spent the weekend on Cape Lookout. It is quite desolate and empty, depending on where you camp. There is a small station/store and some cabins you can rent. But you can pass all that a couple miles down the beach and set up camp right next to the ocean. My wife and I really enjoyed it. It was actual camping. We had to adapt to the sun, wind and blowing sand at points. You camp right on the beach so you have all the surf fishing you want, not too mention the small crabs that crawl up on the beach at night. There is a lighthouse at the very bottom of the island, but it is a few miles drive. If someone wants to do some beach camping, with little amenities, I'd suggest setting up a tent on Cape Lookout. The nearest people to us were probably 2,000 meters away.
