Freezing or Refrigerating seeds

Postby FussyOldHen » Tue Jul 07, 2015 1:33 pm

WHAT do you freeze or refrigerate your seeds in? And how do you handle the individual packaging?

I REALLY need to get a better handle on this.

I got a bunch in a #10 Can and its just on a shelf in the house. I have a bunch more in food saver bags on another shelf. I also have a bunch in the fridge. The ones in the fridge are the ones I opened this season.

I have 'em in both places. The seeds I plan to use next season are in the refrig. But my SHTF stash is in the freezer. I figure if they can put the world's seed collection in a frozen depository, I can too.

You can't just put the seed in the freezer, you first need to put them in the fridge for a week or so then the freezer, when taking seeds out of the freezer, you need to put them into the fridge for a week. This is to simulate what happens in nature, they chill down and it allows the embryo to prepare for the freeze. If you just throw them in the freezer expect to loose some germination ratio, depending on the seed, it could be a 80% failure rate.
Your failure to prepare, does not make it an emergency for me!!

Mombear -- now, that's something I've never thought of, or read about, but it certainly makes sense. Thanks!

Another question on this topic: what kind of containers do you store the individual seed varieties IN? Original paper packet, plastic bags, pill bottles, jars, etc?

I put the original packet in sorting bags (slide closure) and then in paint cans. I'd love to hear if anyone has better ideas.

I keep them in the original package then a ziplock bag, dated by year. I have a tub of seeds in the freezer. I used 10 year old seeds this year and had a mix of germination, the more fragile seeds like onion and carrots did the worst at 40% and the rest was 80% or better.
