Gripe Water - help for colic

Postby AuntBee » Wed Oct 14, 2015 11:25 pm

Does anyone have a reliable recipe for "gripe water?" It's a tea that can help gassy babies burp, but can also be used for gassy old people. So I hear, anyway. Naturally, Aunt Bee does not have gas.

The most common recipe I found is :

2 tablespoons of whole fennel seeds
one “finger” of fresh ginger root (5-6 pieces sliced)
5 teabags of organic chamomile tea (or loose if you choose)
sweetener to taste (optional) (no honey for infants)

Boil the fennel seeds and slices of ginger root in at least 6 cups of water for 15-2o minutes.
Once the water turns a clear golden color remove from heat.
Add chamomile tea and steep.

The other recipe I found used dill seed (not powder) to make a tea.

would that be the same as colic in a baby? if so catnip tea was used a lot for colic in babies. its supposed to be one herb that is ok for infants.

Licorice root. But I'd research anything before giving to a baby, or a pregnant lady. Ginger and licorice tea is wonderful tasting and very soothing to an irritated tummy.
Any of the mints are soothing.

Back in the 40s to the 60s they used paregoric. When we could not afford it we used whiskey. Must be why my son and I drink together today.

My grandmother would use a bit of whiskey, maybe a tsp, warm water and Karo light syrup. Worked wonders.

Probably not pediatrician recommended today but it gave baby and mom a much needed rest.
